Northwestern Ohio’s Toledo, on the Maumee River Valley’s riverbanks, ranks as both a bedroom community for Detroit commuters and as a vibrant city in its own right, with plenty of history to boot. Greater Toledo was pivotal in the War of 1812 through the 1813 erection of Fort Meigs by William Henry Harrison. Sites for Turkey Foot Rock, the Battle of Fallen Timbers and other prominent names in American history are within a 12-mile radius of Toledo. The city was named in the mid-1800s by residents of Port Lawrence and Vistula, envisioning evolution of the two villages into a center of great art, architecture and elegance, much like Toledo of Spain. Emerging has been a city with industry as well as art, with easy access to fishing, golf, sailing and other outdoor sports. In 1887, Edmund Drummond Libbey founded a glass plant in Toledo, now recognized as the glass capital of the world with three sizable and separate companies in operation. Among newest attractions debuting in June 2006 is the Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion, hailed as an architectural masterpiece, and housing a world-class collection of more than 5,000 pieces from ancient to contemporary. Other attractions range from African Safari Wildlife Park, Blair Museum of Lithophanes, and Cedar Point Amusement Park to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center and the Toledo Zoo. Among registered landmarks is the mysterious Pythian Castle downtown at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Ontario Street, built in 1890 by the Knights of Pythias, a secret men’s organization. Toledo’s oldest building still standing is downtown’s Oliver House. Victorian and Edwardian mansions dot Toledo’s Historic West End, the largest collection of Victorians east of the Mississippi. After dark, Toledo comes alive with clubs. pubs, and other places for late-night bites at what often is called the largest concentration of restaurants per capita nationwide. Many are clustered in a newly revitalized downtown near Fifth Third Field, home of minor league baseball’s Toledo Mud Hens. Entertainer and philanthropist Danny Thomas was born in Toledo, also home town of political activist Gloria Steinem, and of actress Katie Holmes, main squeeze of couch jumpin’ film star Tom Cruise. Shopping opportunities range from the Erie Street Market, Farmers Market, and the Maumee Antique Mall to the Libbey Glass Factory Outlet, Fleitz Pumpkin Farm, and Preacher’s Wife Hat Shop & Boutique. Greater Toledo accommodations include more than 7,000 rooms within bed and breakfasts, inns, motels, and hotels.
